Join us for CONVERSATIONS | CONVERSAZIONI: From the American Academy in Rome, as we present American Classics, a series of programs in the U.S. and in Rome that reconsider the classic ideas, texts, songs, and images that define what it means to be “American.” These programs feature leading voices in the arts and humanities–including AAR Fellows, Residents, and special guests–in the form of lectures, presentations and performances.

All events are free and open to the public, but seating may be limited.

2016-2017: American Classics

In 2016-17, the American Academy in Rome presents American Classics: a series of programs that reconsiders the “classic” ideas, texts, songs and images that define what it means to be “American.” In a world of increased internationalism and changing centers of power, the tropes long understood as the basis for American identity are coming under new scrutiny, calling into question the cultural truths that Americans once held to be self-evident. Drawing inspiration from the Academy’s location in Rome, this series aims to understand Americanness in the twenty-first century by investigating the relationship between American ideals and the ancient world, the nature of twenty-first century individualism, and the images and architecture of empire. It also explores how hallmarks of American identity evolve when uprooted from the United States and confronted with other cultures.

Debating these issues across disciplines, events in this series include a keynote lecture by performance artist Ping Chong on performing race in American society; a conference on representations of “republicanism” in nineteenth century American and Italian art; an exhibition of work by American women photographers in Rome across three generations, drawn largely from the Academy’s Photographic Archive, and an exhibition of sculpture by renowned artist Charles Ray that takes its cue from Mark Twain’s classic American tale, Huckleberry Finn.

All events are free and open to the public, but seating may be limited.
