Frequently Asked Questions about the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program

Q: Can the two-week minimum stay requirement be waived?
A: No, it cannot.

Q: Can applications be submitted beyond the application deadlines?
A: Applications are accepted year round. However, as most of the spaces are assigned in June and in February, chances of being accepted into the program diminish when the applications arrive after the deadline.

Q: Can applications be submitted via email?
A: Yes, they can.

Q: Is there an application form to fill out for the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program?
A: No, there is no application form to fill out. The application should consist of a cover letter containing a brief description of the project you plan to undertake while at the Academy, your requirements in terms of space and dates for your stay. A current resume should be included with the application. Artists must supply slides or a catalogue of their work. The cover letter should also indicate if you have any special health requirements or if you will be traveling with children under 18

Q: Is American citizenship a requirement for the Visiting Artists and Scholars program?
A. No, artists and scholars of any nationality may apply.

Q: Which disciplines are admitted to the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program?
A: Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Landscape Architecture, Literature, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, and in humanistic approaches to Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies and Modern Italian studies.

Q: Is Financial Assistance provided for the Visiting Artists and Scholars program?
A: No, it is not. Financial assistance is provided only for Rome Prize winners.

Q: Are meals included in the cost of the accommodation?
A: No, they are not.

Q: What happens when one is accepted into the program?
A: You will receive a letter of notification with a contract to sign and to return to us along with a security deposit.

Q: Will the deposit check be cashed or held until my arrival?
A: The deposit check will be cashed and the amount will be credited against your final bill.

Q: Can credit cards be used to pay for the security deposit?
A: No, they cannot. The security deposit can be paid by check in euros or with a personal check in US dollars for the equivalent amount in euros. You can use your credit card to settle your final bill.

Q: Can I check in before 2pm?
A: Yes, if the accommodation has been cleaned and made ready. 2pm is the latest the space can be made available to you.

Q: Can I check out after 9am?
A: No, the space needs to be prepared for the next occupant.

Q: Are Academy spaces air-conditioned?
A: No, they are not.
