Through the American Academy in Rome’s Visiting Artists and Scholars Program, artists and scholars of any nationality may apply to rent living and working space at the Academy for a period of no less than two weeks to a maximum of four months. Visiting Artists and Scholars are accommodated in the various buildings on the Academy’s eleven-acre property on top of the Janiculum Hill. The administrative offices, the Library, the gallery, the public rooms and most of the living and working spaces are contained in the McKim, Mead & White building, known as the Academy building. The remaining apartments are located in buildings adjacent to the Academy building. The McKim, Mead and White building is off limits to any child under 18. See also the information on buildings.

Various types of accommodation are available at the Academy:

  • Single rooms with bath: suitable for only one person
  • Double rooms with bath: contain a matrimonial bed
  • Study/bedrooms: rooms set up as a study with a sofa bed. There is a sink in the room but no private bath.
  • Apartments: one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments are available. The apartments have fully equipped kitchens and come furnished with essentials items. Radios, television sets, alarm clocks and blow dryers are not provided.
  • Studios in the Academy building measure approximately 400 square feet with 20 foot-high ceilings. Most face north and are filled with natural light. The lighting system is by means of fluorescent lights with two incandescent spotlights. Studios come equipped with essentials such as tables and chairs, drafting tables, easels and a sink. No power tools are available. The walls are outfitted with homosote to make pinning up work easier.
  • Studio/suites have a bedroom loft on top of the studio space. The loft has a double bed with private bath and two small skylights. It is separated from the studio by a large glass panel.
  • Smaller studios, although limited in number, are available outside the Academy building. These do not have much natural light.
With the exception of the studio/suites, all studios are intended for work purposes only. It is not possible to live in them.

All Academy accommodations come completely furnished and the use of linens and all utilities except the telephone is included in the weekly cost. Weekly cleaning is provided. Meals are not included in the cost of the accommodation but Visiting Artists and Scholars are welcome to take their meals in the Academy dining room at an additional charge. They are also welcome to use the Academy’s Library and are given access to common kitchens, laundry rooms and other Academy facilities. High-speed internet connections are provided in all living and work spaces. None of the Academy buildings are air-conditioned. See also information on costs.

Applications for the Visiting Artists and Scholars program are accepted year round. Given the volume of requests, applications are generally reviewed three times a year:

For the housing requests for the period beginning September 15 when the Academy opens through December 31st, the deadline for applications is May 31. Applications are reviewed in June.

For the period January through April, the deadline for applications is September 30, and applications are reviewed in October.

For the period May through July, the deadline to apply is January 31, and applications are reviewed in February.

The Academy closes for approximately one month from early August to early September.

There is no application form to fill out for the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program. Applications should consist of a cover letter containing a brief description of the project you plan to undertake while at the Academy, your requirements in terms of space and dates for your stay (flexibility is an asset). A current resume should be included with the application. Artists must supply slides, catalogue or cds with jpegs of their work. The cover letter should also provide pertinent information (i.e. if you are traveling alone, with a spouse or companion, with children under 18, or if you have any physical disabilities).

Applications should be addressed to:
