Arts Guidelines
*Awarded only by nomination through the American Academy
of Arts and Letters
Architecture, Design (including Fashion Design, Graphic
Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Lighting Design, Set Design, Urban Design,
Urban Planning and other related design fields), and Landscape Architecture
Eleven-month Rome Prize fellowships are available in architecture
and landscape architecture. Six-month fellowships, which are intended
for mid-career professionals, are available in architecture, landscape
architecture and other design fields. Applicants for 11-month fellowships
must hold an accredited degree in the field of application. Applicants
for six-month fellowships must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent
in the field of application, and must also have at least seven years of
professional experience and currently be practicing in the field. Applicants
should submit materials that best display their qualifications and experience
in their particular field.
Application Materials
Required
- Application form (completed online)
- Current résumé
- One-page (950 words or less) project proposal describing work to be undertaken in
Rome that addresses how the Rome experience will be professionally beneficial.
Please identify any resources in Italy that will be significant for
your work.
- Portfolio (not to exceed 12" x 18") that may include photostats,
photographs, small drawings or watercolors of your design work and/or
publications, clippings, research projects or other written materials.
Work submitted should be work done solely by you or substantially by
you, with role in work noted.
- Three reference letters from professionals acquainted with you and
your work. Each letter must be submitted using our online system.
Optional
- Maximum of 18 digital images (JPEG format, longest side 1240 pixels, total file size not to exceed 4 MB) may be submitted
only if still images help to best represent your work. Digital Images may not duplicate
work shown in the portfolio.
- Other materials (videos, DVDs, etc.) if appropriate.
Historic Preservation and Conservation
Applicants may apply for either the six-month or 11-month
Rome Prize fellowship or both. The six-month fellowship is intended for
those individuals who may not be able to spend a year in Rome. Candidates
are expected to be seasoned professionals, actively engaged in their fields,
with enough experience and maturity to give them direction once they arrive
in Rome. These awards are intended to serve a broad range of individuals
who work in those areas of the arts and humanities in which the Academy
gives fellowships, from the conservation of works of art, to architectural
design, to public policy in the management of cities. Applicants are encouraged
to submit materials that best express the quality of what they do and
how they think, particularly if it is out of the ordinary. The jury reviews
a wide range of material in this category and should be able to understand
both the background of the candidate and the professional trajectory he
or she is pursuing.

Musical Composition
Applicants for 11-month Rome Prize fellowships in musical
composition must hold a bachelor's degree in music, musical composition
or its equivalent.
Application Materials
Required

- Current résumé
- One-page (950 words or less) project proposal describing work to be undertaken in Rome
that addresses how the Rome experience will be professionally beneficial.
- At least two but not more than three scores, one of which should be
written for a large ensemble or orchestra. Scores should not exceed
14" x 17". This score requirement will be waived if you do
not transcribe works to written form.
- Compact discs corresponding to the scores submitted. CDs should have
separate tracks for each movement. Label CD cover with the track number,
title of work, composition date, the date of the recording, performers
and timings. Label the disc with your name and composition title(s).
Please note if any performances are computer realizations.
- List of works including composition year and instrumentation.
- Three reference letters from professionals acquainted with you and
your work. Each letter must be submitted using our online system.
Optional
- Other materials (videos, PC compatible CD-ROMs, etc.) if appropriate.
Visual Arts
Applicants for 11-month Rome Prize fellowships in visual
arts must demonstrate at least three years of professional commitment
and currently be engaged in studio work. Artists' media accepted in the visual arts category includes, but is not limited to, painting, photography, film/video, sculpture, installation, mixed media, and new media.

that addresses how the Rome experience will be professionally beneficial.
Please identify any special resources in Italy that will be significant
for your work.
- Maximum of 18 digital images (JPEG format, longest side 1240 pixels, total file size not to exceed 4 MB) may be submitted through the online application system. Digital images will be shown in groups of six. In the initial screening jurors
view only the first six images. Artists whose work is time based are
not required to submit digital images. Work in this type of medium may be presented
by video or DVD. Submit up to two works of 10 minutes maximum length each. Please be sure to provide the title, year of completion, running time and your role in the production for each sample. All DVD samples should include the chapter number, minute and second where the jury should begin viewing. All VHS samples should be cued.
- Three references, with contact information listed (see application
form). Letters from referees are NOT required for visual artists and
if sent will not be considered with the application.
