Marking the five hundredth anniversary of his death, this symposium will consider the afterlife of Raphael’s achievement—in the words of the title of Robert Williams’s last book, the redefinition of art in Renaissance Italy. By bridging historical scholarship and contemporary practice, the symposium will mirror the artist’s achievement itself, which combined the study of antiquity with its revivification in modern art.

“After Raphael: The Afterlife of Raphael’s Art, from His Century to Ours” is sponsored by the American Academy in Rome with the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture, Rome Global Gateway, and Nanovic Institute for European Studies.

Heather Hyde Minor of the University of Notre Dame College of Arts and Letters will give the introduction. The symposium speakers, their home institutions, and their topics are:

  • Ingrid Rowland (1982 Fellow, 2000 Resident), University of Notre Dame (Rome), “Raphael and Vasari”
  • Olivier Bonfait, Université de Bourgogne, “Raphael in France, from Louis XIV to the Revolution”
  • Adriano Aymonino, University of Buckingham, “Raphael and the Battle for a System of the Arts in Eighteenth-Century Britain”
  • D. Jeffrey Mims (2009 Affiliated Fellow), Academy of Classical Design, “Raphael: The Artist as Model”
  • David Mayernik (1989 Fellow), University of Notre Dame School of Architecture (Rome), “The Future of Raphael”
