Marla Stone (1996 Fellow), AAR’s Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities, and Professor of History at Occidental College, has been elected to the Accademia dei Lincei, one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific and scholarly institutions in Europe.
Established in 1603, and located in Palazzo Corsini in Trastevere, the Accademia dei Lincei is composed of 540 members, of which approximately two-thirds are Italian, and the remaining third are foreigners. Members represent disciplines in the sciences and humanities that range from mathematics, chemistry, philology, and linguistics, to art criticism, social and political science, archaeology, and history, among others. Galileo Galilei was elected the sixth member in 1611.
Stone was elected in the category of History, Historical Geography, and Anthropology (Storia e Geografia Storica e Antropica). She was formally inducted on November 10.
“I am moved by this great honor with its profound connection to Roman and Italian history," said Stone, "I very much look forward to participating in this storied institution’s work of investigation and exchange in the worlds of science and social science.”
