I propose to conduct research in and around the EUR district of Rome to examine the relationship between museums and fascism. Following my past investigations of museums and plutocracy, museums and ethnonationalism, museums and neoliberalism, museums and religion, and museums and the carceral state, my goal will be to develop an intervention, in the form of a performance or installation, at one of the museums in the district or in the open-air museum of fascist architecture constituted by parts of the EUR district itself. With authoritarianism on the rise around the world, understanding its twentieth-century history and impact on cultural institutions has taken on new urgency. I hope to explore ways to mitigate susceptibility to the seductions of authoritarianism and the supremacist hatreds it liberates and to understand the role that art and culture play in both enabling and disabling authoritarian impulses.
