Often overlooked as devotional objects, I reimagine the Madonnelle—shrines scattered through the streets of Rome—as micro-theaters of presence, where narrative, architecture, and performance converge. Built from urban spolia, they hover between ruin and renewal, embodying the city’s dialogue between past and present. My project translates their poetic strategies into new approaches to scenic and installation design. Resonating with my feminist inquiry, the Madonnelle reveal how feminine presence and illumination transform public space, asserting visibility within the urban fabric. They show that profound theatrical experiences emerge not only on grand stages but in the flicker of a lamp, in the careful arrangement of fragments. Through this fellowship, I aim to expand scenography’s vocabulary—to explore how architecture, ritual, and performance become instruments of empathy and transformation, allowing theater to reenter the rhythm of everyday life.
