Borders of Belonging: Rome’s Public Spaces as Arenas of Democracy and Dissent
Descrizione del progetto

Borders of Belonging examines how Rome’s public spaces, often celebrated as symbols of civic identity and cultural expression, reflect or obscure the realities and experiences of immigrant communities. The city has historically been both an entry and destination point for migrants, immigrants, and refugees seeking opportunities. Their arrival has profoundly contributed to Rome’s art, architecture, and public spaces while also exposing deep social and political tensions.

Through the lens of art, architecture, and urban design, this research analyzes the social production of Rome’s public spaces through diasporic narratives, past and present, to challenge dominant notions of belonging and social identity through spatial practices.
