Courtney Bryan, 2020 Fellow – Composer
Sounds of Freedom
One of the composers whose Rome Prize Fellowship was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Courtney Bryan will discuss her creative process developing two current and related projects: Awakening, an opera and Sounds of Freedom, a recording. Both projects are inspired by history and explore themes of freedom, spirit, love, home, and sanctuary.

Following his July 3 New York Times article, composer and musicologist George Lewis discusses processes of creolization in classical music, with special attention, via a set of musical examples, to the multiplicity of experiences, aesthetics, and practices that characterizes contemporary Afrodiasporic music.
