Emily Braun

The scholarship of Emily Braun bridges the academy and the museum. She is a specialist in the art of twentieth-century Europe and the United States and has received wide acclaim for her writings on Gustav Klimt, Cubism, and Italian modernism. Beginning in 1987, Braun curated the Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection, and she advised Mr. Lauder on his arts philanthropy. In 2014, she co-curated the Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum; the catalogue received the Award for Excellence from the American Association of Museum Curators. Braun organized Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2015), which received the Dedalus Foundation Catalogue Award. More recently (2022), she co-curated the revelatory Cubism and the Trompe l’Oeil Tradition, also at the Met; its catalogue was a finalist for the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award. Her research has been supported by fellowships from the Getty Foundation, the New York Public Library Center for Scholars and Writers, and CASVA. In 2025 she was named Cavaliere dell' Ordine della Stella d'Italia by the Italian Republic for her contributions to Italian culture.
