APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JANUARY 2, 2025 (11:59pm ET).

The American Academy in Rome has partnered with the Emily Harvey Foundation to create a new residency opportunity for Rome Prize Fellows in Venice, starting in summer 2025. AAR has kindly invited the Society of Fellows to collaborate on the administration of the program.

“This opportunity represents an extension of the Academy’s mission on two axes: to work in Venice, which is the center of new thinking about environmental arts and humanities, and to work with our Rome Prize Fellows, whose continuing activity after their stay is something we care about and take pride in,” says AAR President Peter N. Miller. “These two axes converge in this new residency opportunity, and we are glad to be able to pilot it with the Emily Harvey Foundation.”

Society of Fellows President Phu Hoang (2017 Fellow) adds, “This exciting collaboration with the American Academy in Rome and the Emily Harvey Foundation provides fellows with a unique opportunity to return to Italy and cultivate new ideas. The Society of Fellows serves as a platform to celebrate fellows’ work for years after their Rome Prize, exemplified by this opportunity."

Since 2004, the Emily Harvey Foundation has offered residencies to over five hundred multidisciplinary artists from all over the world, as well as vibrant programming in its historic gallery space in New York City. The new Venice residence is located near Piazza San Marco. The foundation has generously made an apartment available for a two- or four-week residency between June 5 and July 3, 2025.

The AAR-SOF Summer Venice Residency recognizes artists’ and scholars’ need for time and space at all stages of their careers, and the value of residing in inspiring environments to grow ideas or bring projects into focus. We encourage applicants to view this residency as an opportunity to germinate or kick start a project—to develop an idea, move a project from a concept to proposal, or strategize one’s next academic or artistic pursuit. Applicants must submit a current CV, short bio, and a brief (one-page) description of their proposed work, including a few words on how the resources of Venice will contribute to their success. Eligible applicants are actively engaged in scholarly or creative practice.

The SOF-EHF Summer Venice Residency will be offered on an annual basis. We encourage all Rome Prize Fellows to apply. Selected residents will have the use of a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment, equipped with a kitchen, workspace, double bed (suitable for couples or partnerships), bathroom, workspace, WiFi, and telephone. The apartment is a walk-up (no elevator). The residency does not include a stipend, airfare, administrative support, or housekeeping services.

The deadline to apply is extended to Thursday, January 2, 2025 (11:59pm ET). The winner(s) will be notified by January 20, 2025, and announced in February 2025.  For more information, please write to VeniceResidency [at] aarome.org (VeniceResidency[at]aarome[dot]org).
