Kimmah M. Dennis
In Rome I aim to delve into themes of mobility, displacement, immigration, and assimilation, drawing from personal, familial, and global histories. My artistic vision stems from a fusion of inherited trauma and personal displacement experiences. This fellowship provides the space, time, and resources to deepen these explorations, inspired by the city’s historical tapestry reflecting my narrative. I envision creating a series that merges painting, drawing, collage, and installation, influenced by Rome’s cultural richness. The Academy setting allows experimentation with traditional and modern mediums, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. Material selection is crucial, as I seek to imbue art with meaning beyond expression. Rome’s archives offer opportunities for diverse exploration. The absence of certain archives prompts reflection on historical gaps.
