This project will be the continuation of a long-term study of ancient Egyptian stone-working techniques through the documentation, analysis, and replication of tool marks. This Rome Prize Fellowship will enable essential, onsite collaboration with a practicing sculptor and scholar, Peter Rockwell, as well as access to objects in Italian collections selected with the guidance of curators from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Data from this investigation will be an invaluable addition to the corpus of tool mark data. Tool marks will be documented using a recently developed, highly portable imaging method called reflectance transformation imaging (RTI), which yields highly accurate, easily comparable visual representations of an object’s surface. Replication experiments, which will be carried out in Rockwell’s studio, will attempt to reproduce a wide variety of the tool marks documented with RTI.
