The work of the Roman poet Ovid (43 BCE–17/18 CE), and in particular his long poem the Metamorphoses, has had a greater impact on Western art in all genres than that of almost any other classical author. But for contemporary writers, it is not only his compendium of myths, but also the trajectory of his life, beginning as Rome's most celebrated and urbane poet and dying an exile at the outer edge of the Empire, that has resonated powerfully as a song of change. Leading writers of poetry, drama, and fiction will gather with scholars to read from their translations and reimaginings of Ovid's myths and discuss his legacy to literature and art, including his influence on Shakespeare and the Renaissance.

Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Simultaneous translation will be available for the conversations.

This program is made possible through generous gifts by Mrs. Nancy M. O'Boyle and by the Syde Hurdus Foundation, and with the support of the Casa delle Letterature di Roma Capitale and the British School of Rome. Collaborating institutions include the Keats-Shelley House.
