Saving Cultural Heritage in Crisis Areas

Saving Cultural Heritage in Crisis Areas

Internationally renowned leaders in the fields of cultural heritage and cultural property will explore the preservation of cultural heritage in crisis areas. Beginning with strategic response models such as those used by the Carabinieri, the conference will thematically investigate the protection of archaeological sites and museums in the absence of the rule of law, and international responsibility for cultural heritage protection and documentation following natural disasters and armed conflicts. The conference will culminate in one of the Academy’s Conversations that Matter, moderated by American Academy in Rome Director Christopher S. Celenza, FAAR’94.

This conference is organized by C. Brian Rose, FAAR'92, James B. Pritchard Professor of Archaeology, University of Pennsylvania, and Lucy Shoe Meritt Scholar in Residence, American Academy in Rome, and Laurie Rush, FAAR’11, Archaeologist, Fort Drum, New York. It is supported by the Getty Foundation through the Council of American Overseas Research Centers and by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
