Fellow in Visual Arts

During my Rome Prize Fellowship, I’ve been working on a series of body prints, a technique employed extensively by David Hammons (a 1990 Fellow). To make the prints, I coat some part of my body in oil and then press myself onto a sheet of paper. The oil remains on the page. I immediately shake powdered pigment over the oil residue. The pigments stick to the oil making a print that is simultaneously highly detailed and abstracted.

Some of the prints are experiments to better learn the medium. The image I make is indexical—directly tied to my body. In some of the prints, I paint into the image, augmenting what is revealed by the impression of my figure. Others are more expressive and respond to a world on fire with resting on mountains of oppression.

Durante il mio periodo di borsista del Rome Prize, ho lavorato ad una serie di impressioni corporee, una tecnica utilizzata ampiamente da David Hammons (un ex- borsista nel 1990). Per realizzare le stampe, spalmo una parte del mio corpo di olio e poi mi metto sul foglio di carta. L’olio rimane sulla pagina. Subito dopo, cospargo sull’olio rimanente polvere di pigmento. I pigmenti si attaccano all’olio creando una stampa che è sia altamente dettagliata e sia astratta.

Alcune delle stampe sono esperimenti per imparare meglio ad usare il corpo come mezzo. L’immagine che creo, direttamente legata al mio corpo- è un indice. In alcune delle stampe, dipingo nell’immagine, ampliando ciò che viene rivelato dall’impronta della mia figura. Altre sono più espressive e rispondono alla sitauzione mondiale infiammata dall’accumulo di oppressione.
