The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome, an open access and entirely digital journal available via JSTOR, invites submissions for volume 70, to be published in autumn 2025.

We welcome manuscripts in English in the following areas: archaeology, classics, history, the history of art and architecture, economic and political policy, literature, musicology, theory, cultural heritage, and other relevant fields in the ancient, medieval, Renaissance and early modern, and modern periods. We encourage interdisciplinary work on historical and contemporary issues across the humanities including one or more of the chronological periods previously mentioned. Cross-cultural projects that share Italy and its influences are also welcome. All manuscripts are double blind peer reviewed by at least two specialists in the relevant field(s). 

All articles must be original work, free of plagiarism, and must not be published or in press elsewhere.

Articles

The recommended maximum length is 15,000 words, including abstract, article body, works cited, notes, and figure captions. The recommended maximum number of figures is 20. We welcome manuscripts whose scope and/or significance warrants extra space or illustrations on a case-by-case basis; please contact the editor to discuss.

Notes and Discussions

The recommended maximum length is 6,500 words, including abstract, body text, works cited, notes, and figure captions. The recommended maximum number of figures is 5. Notes and discussions are shorter contributions on particular objects or issues.

By submitting an article to the Memoirs, authors agree to the 2012 Consensus Statement on Research Misconduct in the UK by COPE and BMJ and that their research adheres to good ethical and scientific standards. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in the rejection of a submission or the retraction of a published article. All manuscripts for consideration should be submitted electronically as a digital file (such as .doc or .docx, but not PDF).

Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides.

All manuscripts must include an abstract of no more than 150 words.

Any acknowledgments should be written in a section entitled “Acknowledgments,” which should follow the body of the text.

Quotations of sources in foreign languages should be accompanied by English translations. English translations of quotations from foreign-language sources should be accompanied by the text in the original language, either in the text or in a footnote.

Nonnative English-language speakers are strongly advised to have their manuscripts read and edited by a native English speaker prior to submission.
