We welcome manuscripts in English in the following areas: archaeology, classics, history, the history of art and architecture, economic and political policy, literature, musicology, theory, cultural heritage, and other relevant fields in the ancient, medieval, Renaissance and early modern, and modern periods. We encourage interdisciplinary work on historical and contemporary issues across the humanities including one or more of the chronological periods previously mentioned. Cross-cultural projects that share Italy and its influences are also welcome. All manuscripts are double blind peer reviewed by at least two specialists in the relevant field(s). Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome is an open access and entirely digital journal available via JSTOR.

All articles must be original and must not be published or in press elsewhere.

Contributors should select between one of the following two formats:

1. Articles

The recommended maximum length is 15,000 words, including abstract, article body, works cited, notes, and figure captions. The recommended maximum number of figures is 20. We welcome manuscripts whose scope and/or significance warrants extra space or illustrations on a case-by-case basis; please contact the editor to discuss.

2. Notes and Discussions

The recommended maximum length is 6,500 words, including abstract, body text, works cited, notes, and figure captions. The recommended maximum number of figures is 5. Notes and discussions are shorter contributions on particular objects or issues.

Manuscripts, Abbreviations, and Citations

All manuscripts for consideration should be submitted electronically as a digital file (e.g., .doc or .docx, but not PDF). Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides and should conform as much as possible to the guidelines and style sheet of the American Journal of Archaeology, which are available at and All manuscripts must include an abstract of no more than 150 words. Figures, if included, should be appended to the end of the document text or supplied in a separate document.

Nonnative English-language speakers are strongly advised to have their manuscripts read and edited by a native English speaker prior to submission.
