Yesterday the capacity of music to express solidarity was in full evidence at "Raising Voices for Ukraine," a concert organized by the US Embassy in Rome and of which the American Academy in Rome was a partner. The event aimed to harness the unifying power of music to convey support for the Ukrainian people.
Under the artistic direction of AAR Advisor Timothy Martin, the concert blended elements of popular tradition with Ukrainian classics, gospel, African American spirituals, and jazz. Attendees were treated to performances by the Amazing Grace Gospel Choir, the Kyiv Virtuosi Orchestra led by Maestro Dario Vero, American artist Amii Stewart, and Ukrainian talents Liubov Kardash, and Anastasiia Batih. Also representing Ukraine (and AAR) was musician and composer Andrew Arnautov, Artist Protection Fund Fellow in residence at the American Academy in Rome, who showcased his virtuosity on the guitar.
As melodies soared and harmonies intertwined, Ambassador Markell and other dignitaries delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of standing with Ukraine during this grueling chapter of the nation’s ongoing war with Russia.
The concert, a beacon of hope and unity, garnered support from various diplomatic entities, including the British Embassy in Rome, the Canadian Embassy in Rome, and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event underscored the collective commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and empathy.
