From sixteenth century writers’ use of Ancient Roman precedents to describe Inca architecture, to Pope Francis’s 2017 declaration that Native Americas have rights to their ancestral lands, the Italian peninsula and the (Native) Americas have a long history of architectural and cultural entanglement. In this informal lecture, Nair will discuss her architectural research as well as issues that have arisen during her stay in Rome, such as Columbus, transatlantic exchange, and historic preservation practices.

Stella Nair is the Charles K. Williams II Rome Prize Fellow in Historic Preservation and Conservation at the American Academy in Rome and associate professor in the Department of Art History, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, at the University of California, Los Angeles.
