Vitae Pomponianae: Lives of Classical Writers in Fifteenth-Century Roman Humanism
The literary output of Pomponius Laetus (1428–1498), one of the fifteenth century's major humanist thinkers and writers, remains largely unedited and ignored by modern scholarship. This two-day conference addresses this lacuna by looking at one of Laetus and his students' principal interests - biographies of great Latin writers. The conference includes papers on specific manuscripts and/or biographies, as well as analysis of the characteristics of Laetus' biographies. Academy Director Christopher Celenza, FAAR’94, and Pulitzer Prize winner and Stephen Greenblatt, RAAR’10, are among the participants.
The conference is organized with the Det Danske Institut i Rom and the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici at the Università di Roma Tor Vergata, with the collaboration of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento Meridionale (INSRM).
