It is often assumed that the study of classical texts has reached the point at which there is no longer anything much for the editor or palaeographer to do. In this talk, Nigel Wilson of Lincoln College, University of Oxford, proposes to demonstrate from his own experience of fifty-odd years of work in the field that this view is not justified. Even in the case of texts that appear to be well established—and this is by no means true of all—there remains the task of throwing light on their diffusion and subsequent influence. But in recent years, developments in the technology of imaging have created important possibilities of further advances.
