Maaike Schoorel will discuss her work which is informed by her research into the human mind’s ability to perceive and understand the visual world. The subjects of her paintings appear at once recognizable and elusive. Using photographic source material of people, places, and objects, Schoorel’s compositions simultaneously appear and dissolve into the canvas. At the American Academy, she is working on several projects: a publication with CURA in Rome as well as an exhibition at Fondazione Memmo, an exhibition at Marc Foxx in Los Angeles, and the Sydney Biennale.

Schoorel is the Mondriaan Fonds/Dutch Affiliated Fellow in the Visual Arts and Winner of the Dutch Prix de Rome in Visual Arts.
