“Questions as Tools in Art, Science and the Humanities” at the American Academy

Questions as Tools in Art, Science and the Humanities is a documentary film produced by the American Academy in Rome that features interviews with a dozen fellows of the MacArthur Foundation and the Academy from across several domains of creativity. The documentary highlights their use and thinking around the instrumentalization of intellectual inquiry.

Questions as Tools was directed by Hideo Mabuchi, professor of applied physics at Stanford University, and Peter N. Miller, President of the American Academy in Rome. A screening of the shorter version of Questions as Tools will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Miller and featuring Richard Kenney, a poet and professor of English at the University of Washington, and Marina Rustow (2007 Fellow), the Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East and professor of Near Eastern studies and history at Princeton University.

Additional public screenings were held at Stanford University in California on November 6, 2024, and at Cooper Union in New York on December 4, 2024. Each event has the same format: a presentation of the shorter version of the film followed by a Q&A with invited speakers.

This event is free and open to the public. Please register to attend in person.
