A new opera by Vittorio Montalti (2014 Italian Fellow), titled Le leggi fondamentali della stupidità umana, will debut this month during the eighty-second Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. Performances will take place on May 25, 29, and 31.

The modernist architect Kevin Roche, who was an American Academy of Rome Trustee from 1968 to 1971, died on March 1, 2019. Roche was 96 years old.

The Vilcek Foundation has given the inaugural Vilcek Prize for Excellence to Carmen C. Bambach (1994 Fellow, 2015 Affiliated Fellow), a curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The prize, which includes a $100,000 award, is given to an immigrant who has had a significant impact on American society and world culture.

Matter Design, led by its director and cofounder Brandon Clifford (2018 Fellow in architecture), is one of five finalists for MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program 2019.
