The American Academy in Rome, in partnership with the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of Italy’s Ministry of Culture, announces a fellowship opportunity aimed at advancing curatorial research and promoting Italian contemporary art on an international stage. This unique residency program, spanning March 3 to May 23, 2025, offers curators a transformative chance to engage with AAR’s vibrant cultural network while conducting innovative research at the intersection of Italy’s art scene and the global contemporary landscape. The deadline to apply is Thursday, January 30, 2025.

This fellowship is designed for Italian curators or non-Italian curators residing in Italy whose work focuses predominantly on contemporary Italian art. It is a call to those with a proven track record—at least five years of curatorial experience—and a passion for connecting Italian artistic practices with international platforms. Applicants are invited to propose bold research projects that explore new perspectives on Italian contemporary art, stimulate transatlantic dialogues, and cultivate collaborations between Italian and American cultural institutions.

The fellowship provides unparalleled support and resources, including accommodation, workspace, and meals at AAR’s picturesque headquarters in Rome, alongside a monthly research grant of €2,000. Fellows will benefit from the Academy’s rich interdisciplinary environment, which fosters connections with scholars, artists, and thought leaders across diverse fields. The residency culminates in a shoptalk presentation in Rome and a significant research presentation in New York during fall 2025, offering fellows an influential platform to share their findings and initiate new partnerships.

As part of the program, fellows are expected to actively engage in the AAR community, collaborate with its international network, and organize events such as talks, conferences, or roundtables. These activities aim to amplify the visibility of Italian contemporary art in the US, spotlighting the opportunities and institutional support available through the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity.

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM on January 30, 2025, using the specified format outlined in the open call. Required documentation includes a CV, a list of curatorial experiences, a compelling research proposal, a motivational letter, and a letter of reference. Candidates will be assessed by a distinguished selection committee based on their professional experience, the quality of their research proposal, and their vision for fostering cultural exchange. Finalists will be invited for an interview to further evaluate their qualifications and communication skills.

This fellowship underscores the shared commitment of AAR and the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity to support emerging and midcareer curators while promoting Italian contemporary art globally. It offers a remarkable opportunity to immerse oneself in the dynamic artistic and intellectual life of the Academy, engage with leading cultural institutions, and contribute to the international appreciation of Italy’s contemporary creativity.

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to advance your career and make a lasting impact on the global art scene. Please download and review the guidelines and apply by the deadline to join this prestigious program and become part of a legacy that champions cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
