On Friday evening, September 24, 2010, the American Academy Gallery hosted more than 250 visitors at the opening of an ambitious photographic exhibition, A Question of Time. The show, which runs through October 15, 2010, is part of the ninth edition of FotoGrafia: Festival Internazionale di Roma (September 24–October 24, 2010). See here for a slide show of selected works on view at the AAR.
The Question of Time exhibition is the culmination of a two-year project directed by Alessandra Capodiferro (curator of the AAR Photographic Archive), Marco Delogu (director of the Rome International FotoGrafia Festival), and Lavinia Ciuffa (curatorial assistant of the AAR Photographic Archive). In all, the project comprised two workshops, two exhibitions (the first was staged in June 2009), and a catalogue. Throughout, work focused on the Aurelian walls and the city outside the walls—the famous Campagna Romana.
The workshops, held in May 2009 and June 2010, invited leading contemporary photographers to study iconic images in the permanent collection of the AAR’s Photographic Archive. The artists then produced original works in response to the archive’s images of ancient Rome. The exhibitions placed these contemporary and historical works side-by-side.
Photographers in the current exhibition on view in the AAR Gallery include Tim Davis (2008 Fellow), Marco Delogu, Juan Fabuel, Agnès Geoffray, Graciela Iturbide, Giuliano Matteucci, Tod Papageorge (2009 Resident), and Leonie Purchas.
All the components of this project—the catalogue, workshops and exhibitions—were made possible by a generous grant from the Getty Foundation in support of the Photographic Archive of the American Academy in Rome.
The exhibition is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and from 4:00 to 6:00pm; or by appointment until October 15, 2010.
