The Rome Prize will allow me to work on River Citizen, a collection that draws from my transnational childhood spent across North and Central America. The manuscript examines borders—between geologies, cultures, and languages, between humanity and the natural world. The poems I will work on in Rome will see the Tiber River as Roman citizen, with the same rights of protection that human citizens enjoy. At its heart, River Citizen looks for transnational perspectives on the borderless problem of climate change.
