Detail of Douglas Argue, Book Burning 2, 2023, oil and archival inkjet print on canvas, 36½ x 36⅛ in.

The New York City–based artist Doug Argue (1997 Fellow) will discuss his ancestry, personal history, the history of his work, and the censorship of his paintings along with the banning of his book at the Weisman Art Museum during his survey exhibition last year.

This event, to be presented on Zoom, is free and open to the public.

Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Argue has created a striking body of abstract work that encompasses a diversity of mediums and formats. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including at Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica and at Edelman Arts and Haunch of Venison in New York. Most recently, two of his paintings were commissioned for the lobby of One World Trade Center in Manhattan. Argue’s work has been collected by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Walker Art Center, Weisman Art Museum, and numerous corporate and private collections. The artist has been the recipient of multiple awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant (1995). The Weisman Art Museum staged a survey of his thirty-year painting career in 2023, curated by Elizabeth Armstrong. Argue was also the subject of a monograph published by Skira in 2020. Both the exhibition and book were called Letters to the Future.
