The Queer Jubilee: 25 Years of Resistance

Seminar/Workshop

The Queer Jubilee: 25 Years of Resistance

World Pride Rome 2000 was a crucible in the global battle for queer and trans rights. The march brought forth an international community of resistance to Rome that challenged the Vatican’s Jubilee, introducing new levels of queer visibility that inform contemporary celebrations of the queer jubilee—an act of anti-clerical resistance through liberated bodies and spaces.

This giornata di studio brings together historic activists and scholars to reflect on the past and future of queer and trans rights in Italy, on themes as far-reaching as the ban on surrogacy to the introduction of queer studies in the Italian university system. The seminar will discuss contemporary political struggles both in and out of the university, asking how 25 years of activism has served as both a site of celebration as well as a means for generating new modes of radical resistance and critique.

The seminar extends from a collaboration between Il Circolo di Cultura Omosessuale “Mario Mieli” and the American Academy in Rome, with the participation of Lucas R. Ramos, PhD candidate at Columbia University and Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. The event will be held in Italian at the Circolo di Cultura Omosessuale Mario Mieli, located at Via Efeso 2A, 00146 Rome.
