Theater of Architecture
“The great gift of three months in Rome as a Resident in April, May and June of 2011 made this book possible. That opportunity to write about twenty projects taken from forty years of professional practice was a particularly nourishing experience in the Academy’s environment. What better place to consider the influence of a dialogue between old and new!”
- Hugh Hardy, 2011 Resident, FAIA
A discussion with renowned architect and author, Hugh Hardy, and a signing of his new book Theater of Architecture, published by Princeton Architectural Press. The quintessential New Yorker, Hugh’s irrepressible love of the city animates all of his work, which can be found in many of the city’s most beloved institutions and public places, including theaters, performing arts venues, public spaces, and cultural facilities.
Theater of Architecture gathers twenty of Hardy’s projects, both within New York City and beyond, to frame a candid discussion about the collaborations, challenges, and strategies that gave rise to each project’s design. In exploring the questions of how design of architectural space is best influenced by one’s experience—rather than just a concern for the results of geometry.
