On 2–3 February, the renowned Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra performed two concerts at the American Academy in Rome as the culminating events of a week-long residency. This is the tenth year of the group’s annual visit and concert series for the AAR community and the city of Rome.
Scharoun Ensemble performed music by Ashley Fure and Suzanne Farrin, two current Rome Prize Fellows in musical composition, and by Federico Gardella, a 2018 Italian Fellow. It also played selections from its repertoire written by six former Fellows—Lisa Bielawa (2010), Keeril Makan (2009), Paula Matthusen (2015), Andrew Norman (2007), Paul Rudy (2011), and Nina Young (2016)—and one past Resident, Martin Brody (2002).
The photographs in this slideshow depict the moments before the performances and during rehearsal sessions during the day. Complete caption information for each picture is forthcoming.
