Project title
Apocalypse Now or Later: The Super Prophetas of Pseudo-Joachim of Fiore
Project description

This dissertation is the first comprehensive study of a thirteenth-century text that was falsely attributed to Joachim of Fiore. Though spurious, it shaped Joachim’s vast influence on intellectual history. Joachim studies have been hampered by a lack of modern editions, especially of the pseudo-Joachite texts, which remain largely unexplored even as they represent a vital link between Joachim and his followers. This effort is intended as a major step toward understanding in this area. Because further analysis depends on an established text, this project will present a working edition, based on a 1517 print and two Vatican manuscripts. However, I require an extended stay in Italy to study other early manuscripts (four others in Rome, one each in Perugia and Venice) and the relationship between our text and another work (one copy in Rome) that has been misidentified with it. This research is needed to produce a critical edition and to transform the dissertation into an important book.
