Play is a project about the extension of fiction, off the page, into space (by way of exhibitions, videos and performances) and back into print. The aim of this project is to research public and private sites across Rome which have been the setting for history and literature, fact and fiction, past and present and within them, to stage discrete, site-specific exhibitions as narrative vignettes. These will culminate in a series of paperback publications and short videos online: a new serial fiction. This idea is a play on translation: the translation of literature into exhibitions, of exhibitions into books, of history into the backdrop for fiction. Rome, as a city infused with narrative, with public histories and private lives, has often inspired filmmakers and writers to present its stories in vignettes, in constant and repeating motion, updated each time by the characteristics of their generation.
