Hands-on Greek Vases

Greek vases have been regarded, from antiquity, as highly valued objects. These beautifully crafted artefacts were produced and exported in the Mediterranean and became symbols of luxury to be displayed in elite houses and then in tombs. The artists’ virtuosity lies not only in the beautifully depicted myths on their surfaces, but also the advanced technical skills in shaping and firing. This workshop will offer both a hands-on experience with original Greek vases, and a demonstration of the process, from wheel-forming to the final steps of the decoration.
A brief opening session will be conducted by Prof. Massimo Betello of ROME-SPQR together with the curator of the Norton-Van Buren Archaeological Study Collection of the American Academy in Rome, Dr. Valentina Follo. This event comprises two activities:
- Participants will examine a selection of ancient Greek vases from the Norton-Van Buren Archaeological Study Collection. Dr. Follo will illuminate these artifacts' function, craftmanship, dating, and iconography. Participants will be allowed to handle some archaeological objects.
- Participants will meet Roberto Paolini, a professional potter who uses historic methods of pottery production. Paolini will explain how vessels were produced and then demonstrate the application of slip for black-figure and red-figure techniques. Participants will be able to handle the vase reproductions.
Participants will be divided into two groups and each group will take part in both activities. We conclude with final remarks and refreshments.
The event is free of charge and open to a maximum of 40 participants who are required to register in advance due to limited space. This is hosted by the American Academy with the support of the Archaeological Institute of America.
The event will be held in English.
For access to the Academy, guests will be asked to show a valid photo ID. Backpacks and luggage with dimensions larger than 40 x 35 x 15 cm (16 x 14 x 6 in.) are not permitted on the property. There are no locker facilities available. You may not bring animals (with the exception of seeing-eye/guide dogs).
