Project description

In Rome I will study Annibale Carracci and landscape as metaphor and literal sign in my art practice by addressing moments of in-between. Drawings would form the basis of my fellowship, and Carracci—an artist who bridged Mannerism and Neoclassicism and was noted for elevating landscape as a genre—would inspire my study. Landscape provides the study, the background, the skeleton—the in-between. Historically, through Carracci landscape is no longer subjugated to a tertiary role/background. Currently, landscape functions within norms as another in-between with disparate points of view. My exploration will address the different audiences/parties that make up art—making, viewing, conservatorship, the patronage process. The physical form of this study would manifest through a continuation of my study of plants/flowers/landscapes/vessels and their portrayal through installation, sculpture, photography, drawing, even sgraffito.
