Spontaneous Interventions originated as the official U.S. presentation at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale (2012), where it earned the U.S. a Special Mention from the Golden Lion jury in the competition for Best Pavilion. The show, devoted to actions initiated by architects, designers, planners, artists, and everyday citizens to improve public space, was curated by New York-based design journalist and editor Cathy Lang Ho, FAAR 2009 (Design). She talks about the installation concept in an interview at the Biennale. The award-winning exhibition design was a collaboration between Brooklyn-based Freecell, led by Lauren Crahan and John Hartmann, FAAR 2005 (Architecture) and Berkeley communication design studio M-A-D, led by Erik Adigard, FAAR 2013 (Design) and Patricia McShane. Governors Island, a former military base which is now New York City's newest park, is home to dozens of historic buildings and 125 acres of open space, including a new 30-acre section designed by West 8 with Diller Scofidio + Renfro (Elizabeth Diller, AFAAR 1981).
