Carrie Mae Weems receives a MacArthur Fellowship, María Elena González wins an international prize, and Wendy Heller's new book is out.
Visual artist Carrie Mae Weems, FAAR'06 has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. James Estrin of the New York Times spoke with her in an interview entitled The 'Genius' of Carrie Mae Weems. The photographic work Roaming was shot in and around Rome during her year at the Academy. Her retrospective, Carrie Mae Weems:Three Decades of Photography and Video, will be at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University in Stanford, California from 16 October to 5 January, 2014 and opens at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on January 24, 2014. A new book by Wendy Heller, FAAR'01 was just been released. Music in the Baroque, part of the series Western Music in Context:A Norton History, focuses on the the impact of music during the 17th and early 18th centuries.
María Elena González, FAAR'04 won the Grand Prize at the 30th Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia for her work Tree Talk. Through a series of manipulations incvolving rubbings, scanning, and laser-cutting she converted bark from a birch tree into a sound piece for player piano. The exhibition continues until 24 November at the International Centre of Graphic Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park, all in Ljubljana.
