2013 Tribute Dinner - New York

Each spring the American Academy in Rome pays tribute to a person or persons who have inspired the Academy’s mission and made a significant difference in the areas of artistic and intellectual endeavors. Join us Wednesday, April 17 for the annual American Academy in Rome Tribute Dinner at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

This year we celebrate visionary excellence: the ability to look at a project or entity and bring new ideas and life to it. Through their work, all of our honorees have made interdisciplinary collaboration a core principle. This year is especially important as we celebrate Adele Chatfield-Taylor, 1984 Fellow and president and CEO of our great institution. For twenty-five years Adele has devoted her life to the Academy. Under her leadership each of the eight buildings in Rome has been restored and renovated, the grounds are now among the most beautiful in the city, the Academy’s endowment has been increased five-fold, and its program and operations have been funded without a deficit. The Academy will honor Adele with its Medal of Excellence.

The Academy will also recognize the architecture firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro with a Centennial Medal for Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro, principals of one of the world’s foremost design studios that is known for its integration of architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Their most recent triumphs are the Lincoln Center complex, the redesign of Alice Tully Hall, the High Line, and the expansion of the Juilliard School, among many others.

Cocktails are at 7:00pm, and dinner begins promptly at 7:45pm.

The special Fellow and Affiliated tickets are limited to two tickets per Fellow or Affiliated Fellow. Due to limited seating, these tickets are now sold out.

Seating is limited; reservations are required. Please RSVP by Friday, April 12, 2013.

2015 Spring Gala - New York

Join us for the American Academy in Rome’s Spring Gala on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

Salute honorees Robert B. Silvers, James Turrell and Carrie Mae Weems (2006 Fellow).

A Trustee Emeriti of the American Academy in Rome, Robert B. Silvers has served as editor of the New York Review of Books since 1963. He has edited or coedited several essay anthologies, including Hidden Histories of Science, The New York Review Abroad: Fifty Years of International Reportage, and The Legacy of Isaiah Berlin.

For over forty years James Turrell has created works that explore the effect of light within a created space. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships, Turrell has had over 160 solo exhibitions worldwide. His work, often large scale and architectural, engages viewers with the limits and wonder of human perception.

The American artist Carrie Mae Weems (2006 Fellow) has developed a complex body of art that employs photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation, and video over the last thirty years. Her work has led her to investigate family relationships, gender roles, and the histories of racism, sexism, class, and various political systems. Weems has exhibited widely at major national and international museums and is a recipient of several awards, including the Rome Prize and a MacArthur Fellowship.

Proceeds of the evening will provide vital support for the Academy’s mission of supporting and advancing the arts and humanities.

Seating is limited; reservations required.

Cocktails begin at 6:30pm and dinner at 7:30pm.

Thank you to everyone who supported our New York Gala on October 26, 2021!

Our generous donors raised more than $1.3 million to support the Academy’s programming and gathered for a truly special night honoring Mary Schmidt Campbell (Trustee Emerita), Julie Mehretu (2020 Resident), and John Guare (2013 Resident) and featuring a performance of a piece by Tania León (1998 Resident).

The evening featured a film about the impact of the Academy that you can view here.
