The artist Franc Palaia (1986 Fellow) will show multimedia collages in Urban Cuba- Cuba Urbano, his solo exhibition at Changolife Arts in Beacon, New York, on view until August 31.

Opening today, Singularities gathers paintings by our 1949 Fellow and 1971 Resident Philip Guston. The exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich features a tour led by Musa Mayer, the artist’s daughter and president of the Guston Foundation.

Today the conservator and author Rosa Lowinger (2009 Fellow) will speak on a panel addressing “Touchstones of Identity: Safeguarding Our Cultural DNA” at the Smithsonian’s American Latino Museum in Washington, DC.

A survey of work by Christopher Wool (1990 Fellow) from the past decade, the largest since 2014, will run through July 31, 2024. The show, organized by Wool with curator Anne Pontégnie, takes up the entire unoccupied nineteenth floor of 101 Greenwich Street in New York’s financial district.

The photographer Allen Frame (2018 Fellow) joins Jeanine Oleson (2024 Fellow) and Gabriele Giugni at Spazio Supernova, a three-year cultural project based in Trastevere, to read from Sounds in the Distance by David Wojnarowicz.

The Academy’s interim Andrew W. Mellon Humanities Professor, Allison Emmerson (2019 Fellow), will appear on the next episode of Mary Beard’s BBC podcast Being Roman with Mary Beard. The episode, titled “Three Lovers and a Funeral,” airs on Tuesday, June 4.

Northwestern University has honored the art historian Rebecca Zorach (2021 Resident) with its Dorothy Ann and Clarence L. Ver Steeg Distinguished Research Fellowship Award.

National Black Theatre will stage The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout at the Kennedy Center Opera House on June 1. The program includes 2020 Fellow Courtney Bryan’s composition Sanctum.

Cliffton S. Peacock (1995 Fellow), an award-winning painter and a College of Charleston professor who studied under Philip Guston, has died. He was 70 years old.

Long Beach Opera in California will host the first of three performances of Ipsa Dixit by Kate Soper (2024 Fellow) on June 1. The opera, described as a “captivating journey through [a] mind-bending world,” features dancers from the Martha Graham Dance Company.

Tod Marder (1998 Fellow) and Joseph Connors (1987 Resident, former Director) will present papers on Bernini and Borromini at a two-day conference, taking place May 30–31 in Rome. Accademia di San Luca organized the event, titled Roma barocca, on the first anniversary of the death of the architect and historian Paolo Portoghesi.

On May 31 Bourse de Commerce–Pinault Foundation offers a special screening of the short film Mangrovia, directed by the French artist Low Jack and Invernomuto (2019 Italian Fellows), for this “Nuit Blanche” event in Paris.

Cambridge University Press has just published Freed Persons in the Roman World: Status, Diversity, and Representation, a new volume of essays edited by Sinclair Bell (2003 Fellow), Dorian Borbonus (2017 Fellow), and Rose MacLean. The book includes writing by Borbonus, Katharine Huemoeller (2016 Fellow) and Dan-el Padilla Peralta (2023 Resident).

The opening of David Zwirner: 30 Years—which features all of the gallery’s artists including Raymond Saunders (1966 Fellow) and James Welling (2024 Resident)—inaugurates a new Los Angeles building designed by Annabelle Selldorf (2018 Resident).

Last week the Africa Center in New York opened I Hope This Helps, a solo exhibition comprising multisensory installations by the artist and poet Samiya Bashir (2020 Fellow). The work, which debuted at the Academy in February 2020, will be on view through July 31.

The University of Michigan is hosting conference called “How It All Works: Ritual in the Ancient Mediterranean,” organized by Celia E. Schultz (2005 Fellow), chair of the Department of Classical Studies. The event, which gathers scholars in religion, history, philosophy, and archeology, runs from May 22 to 23.

During this May 22 lecture, Leslie Cozzi (2018 Fellow) will explore women artists who integrated language in their work during her lecture “Arte al Femminile: Women in Italian Visual Poetry” at the Center for Italian Modern Art in New York.

Lorelei Ensemble has released the world-premiere recording of Beaufort Scales by Christopher Cerrone (2016 Fellow) on the Cold Blue Music record label.

Jenny Holzer (2004 Resident) returns to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum for Light Line, a reimagining of her installation at the same venue in 1989. The exhibition, opening today, also features a projection of texts on the outside walls of the famous Frank Llloyd Wright building in New York.
