The God of the Woods is the new novel from Liz Moore (2015 Fellow), to be published tomorrow by Riverhead Books. The author has created “a richly textured drama, both emotionally nuanced and propelled by a double-barreled mystery.”

On July 1 the historian Renée Baernstein (1991 Fellow) will begin a new appointment as dean of the College of Arts and Science at Miami University in Ohio, where she has taught since 1993.

The Kronos Quartet performed the world premiere of a new composition by Jonathan Berger (2017 Fellow), Hajar Yasini, at the Kronos Festival in San Francisco on June 21. The piece featured words by Nathalie Khankan and a video by Penny Hes Yassour.

On June 28 Abigail DeVille (2018 Fellow) opens In the Fullness of Time at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Maine. In this solo exhibition the artist “explores how marginalized communities persevere through their search for renewal and happiness as they migrate to new places that become sanctuaries.”

The Art of Harry Davis, an exhibition at the Indiana Landmarks Center in Indianapolis featuring the work of Harry A. Davis Jr., a 1941 Rome Prize Fellow, ends its month-long run on June 28.

On June 26, the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council presents a new edition of its “Know Your Ocean Speaker Series” featuring Evelyn Tickle (2002 Fellow), the founder and CEO of GRoW Oyster Reefs. Tickle will discuss using biomimetic design and concrete fabrication to tackle the work of reef restoration around the world.

The next Congress of the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art unfolds from June 23 to 28 in Lyon, France. The conference theme, “Matter Materiality,” focuses on the object and its uses over the centuries and across cultures. Speakers include Emily B. Frank (2024 Fellow), Dario Gamboni (2022 Resident), John Lansdowne (2017 Fellow), Ellen Pearlstein (2022 Fellow), Antoine Picon (2020 Resident), and Rebecca Zorach (2021 Resident).

Tomorrow the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, reopens after a four-year renovation with gardens designed by OLIN, headed by Laurie Olin (1974 Fellow, 1990 and 2008 Resident) and galleries by KieranTimberlake, led by Stephen J. Kieran (1981 Fellow) and James Timberlake (1983 Fellow).

A Carrie Mae Weems (2006 Fellow) survey, Remember to Dream, opening on June 22 at Bard College’s Hessel Museum of Art, offers “seldom displayed and lesser-known works that demonstrate the evolution of her pioneering, politically engaged practice.”

Linda Pollak (2004 Fellow), a founding partner of Marpillero Pollak Architects, has received an honorary membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The next AZURE Talk, taking place on June 20 at George Brown College in Toronto, features the acclaimed landscape architect Julie Bargmann (1990 Fellow), founder of D.I.R.T. Studio, who will deliver a presentation on her inspiring career.

Anthony Cutler (1992 Resident), an expert in Byzantine ivory carvings and the Evan Pugh University Professor Emeritus of Art History at Pennsylvania State University, died on May 16, 2024. He was 90 years old.

Nicholas Terpstra (2019 and 2023 Affiliated Fellow), professor of history at the University of Toronto and a specialist in Renaissance politics, religion, gender and charity, will join his school’s Trinity College as provost and vice chancellor.

Tomorrow Andy Akiho (2015 Fellow) and the ensemble Imani Winds will release BeLonging, a recording whose music was inspired by the sounds of immigrants being held at a Brooklyn detention center in 2019.

On June 16 the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham will present the world premiere of Invisible Angels, a composition for unaccompanied choir by Mark Kilstofte (2003 Fellow), at Duke University Chapel. Admission to the concert, titled What the Earth Says, is free.

Today Harvard University Press publishes a fresh rendition of Cicero’s Fragmentary Speeches, edited and translated by Jane W. Crawford (1982 Fellow) and Andrew R. Dyck.

The first of four summer open houses for Treaties on De-Fences, an exhibition by Jorge Otero-Pailos (2022 Resident), takes place on June 12 at the National Museum of American Diplomacy in Washington, DC.
