“You know, it’s heavily restored”, practically whispered the FAAR in ancient studies as a large, animated group of classicist and archaeologist Fellows and alums of the American Academy passed the iconic façade of the Alamo.

The occasion? Returning from a rocking AAR Society of Fellows reception at the 112th Joint Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Philological Association. That took place in San Antonio Texas from Thursday the 6th through Sunday the 9th of January 2011.

The highlights? The annual meetings of the Advisory Council to the School of Classical Studies as well as the Classical Society of the AAR, where beloved Librarian Emerita Christina Huemer (1947-2010) was honored with a minute of silence, and the announcement of a campaign to endow a traveling lectureship in her memory.

The SOF reception at SoHo in the historic (ca. 1892) San Antonio Loan Trust Building, which featured a thumping DJ set and an exhibition of paintings by artists that included Franco Mondini-Ruiz (FAAR’05) and other artists. Well over 125 attended.

And the moment on the Saturday evening when the four-year presidency of the Archaeological Institute of America passed from AAR Trustee C. Brian Rose (FAAR’92) to Elizabeth Bartman (FAAR’83, RAAR’09).

Meanwhile Harvard Classics professor and 2010 Jerome Lecturer Kathleen Coleman assumed presidency of the American Philological Association for the coming year.

The 2012 Joint Annual Meetings of the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Philological Association take place from 5-8 January 5-8 in Philadelphia, PA. Future locations are Seattle (2013), Chicago (2014), New Orleans (2015), and San Diego (2016).
