The American Academy in Rome recently announced the winners of the Rome Prize Fellowship, which annually supports advanced independent work in the arts and humanities in a unique residential community in Rome. These twenty-nine artists and scholars will receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board for a period of six months to two years in Rome. The presentation was made at the Arthur and Janet C. Ross Rome Prize Ceremony, which was held at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.
“The interdisciplinary mix of the Rome Prize winners represents the leading edge of contemporary American scholarship and creativity,” said Academy President Mark Robbins, FAAR’97. “Each Rome Prize Fellow is enriched by their experience in Rome and when they return, their work has a profound impact on the cultural life of the US and beyond for decades to come.”
This year’s Rome Prize winners were presented by Mary Margaret Jones, FAAR’98, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and were welcomed by Robbins and Academy Director Kim Bowes, FAAR’06. The ceremony also featured a presentation by artist and 2006 Fellow Carrie Mae Weems, in dialogue with Robbins, in which her creative work and process were discussed in relation to her fellowship in Rome. This was the fourth and the season’s last installment of the new programming series,Conversations/Conversazioni: From the American Academy in Rome.
“The Academy thanks each of Rome Prize Jurors for their commitment to this process,” said Robbins. “Collectively they embody the best of their respective disciplines.”
Rome Prize winners are selected by independent juries of distinguished scholars and artists through a national competition process in one of the eleven disciplines supported by the Academy, including: Literature, Music Composition, Visual Arts, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, and Historic Preservation and Conservation, as well as Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern, and Modern Italian Studies. More than nine hundred applications were submitted from 46 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, making this an exceptionally competitive field.
