Profession
PhD Candidate in Music History and Literature, Department of Music, University of California, Berkeley
Project title
Modernity Sings: Rethinking Realism in Italian Opera
Project description

Arman Raphael Schwartz’s project places modernist writings on the death of opera in dialogue with earlier Italian work more conventionally described as “realist,” suggesting that composers from Verdi to Puccini were more engaged with the principal dilemmas of modernity than was previously assumed. His thesis examines the widespread assumption that opera and modernity are simply incompatible.
